New York: My experience in the Big Apple [as a Bord Bia Smurfit grad]
A snapshot into my experience in New York so far as a grad on the Bord Bia graduate programme with Smurfit.
Hi there! My name is Oisín and I'm currently based in Bord Bia's Amsterdam office as an International Graduate. The course combines challenging, real work experience on a paid work placement with top class academic courses with the end result being an Msc in Global Business Practice from the UCD Michael Smurfit School of Business. I'm still not even half way through but have learned so much already from lectures and industry experience. Hopefully this short summary of how I landed in this role and what it's entailed so far can serve as guide for those of you considering what you'd like to pursue after college.
The food and drink industry is undoubtedly a critical driver of the Irish economy. Following its expansion into several new priority markets, the food export industry reached an estimated value of €13 billion in 2019 (Bord Bia, 2020). However, the power and potential of this exciting industry does not cease at its economic credentials.
For every international student, the time of studying in Ireland must be an unforgettable time in life. Either you came to Ireland for your undergraduate study or Masters, there is a dilemma after graduation – to stay in Ireland for the Irish stuff you like, or to go back to home country and first language? To continue pursue a worldwide recognized degree in Ireland or to go back home get a job and start your career?
The masters in Global business in UCD Smurfit is something that 18 months ago, I wouldn’t have started to consider applying for. The thought of further education past my undergraduate course was as far away as I could dream of. Yet here I sit, typing out this blog about the decision to take a 23 month Master’s program and hopefully turn it into one of the best decisions I could make in my life.
