While the nation struggles to get to grips with the restrictions set in place by the government we wanted to show some very simple ways you can keep on top of your game for the coming months when it comes to home exercise.
Walking/ Running
Thanks captain obvious you might say, but this is still the best way to hit your ten thousand step quota for the day.
As we all adjust to working and studying from home, our movement and step count is very limited on a day to day basis. Personally my work desk is five feet from my bed! I, like everyone else have had to adapt my daily routine to try work in some general movement, taking a short run(2km area obviously) on my lunch break. It is also a great way to just pull yourself away from a screen for a few minutes in the day.
Cycling
Albeit this one does require an initial financial investment to get a bike, if you have one or can avail of one it is a great way to get out and burn some calories. Personally I prefer going for a long cycle as you can get the bit further on a bike and feel like you’ve done a bit more with your day!
During restricted times such as these though it can still be beneficial to simply cycle to the shop instead of driving. You can also do circuits in a 2km radius, find a hill and do sprints on bike up and down!
Home Workouts
There are a plethora of fitness instructors and Personal Trainers taking to the web now that their industry has taken such a hard hit over the last few weeks that you can learn from.
The number one trending video in Ireland on Youtube for the past few days has been Joe Wicks, The Body Coaches ‘P.E. Class’. Which is a 30 minute home workout, perfect to squeeze in a lunch time break from work or studies.
There are so many more I could mention on this topic, please let us know who your favourite online coach is in the comments!
Stand while working
This is a lost opportunity for most people who work sedimentary jobs, sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day if not more. It has been proven you can burn hundreds if not thousands of calories extra a day if you stand while working.
This is a simple yet brilliant example of how you can adapt to working at home but still keep on top of your fitness. So if you have a table top in your kitchen (avoid snacking) or a high table in a study, this is a great option for you.
Bonus tip: Adopt a dog from a shelter!
There are plenty of dog shelters who constantly seek temporary adoption households for their animals. Now that most of us are having to stay at home it is a perfect opportunity to take a dog in for a couple of months while we get to grips with this pandemic. Going on a couple of short walks a day or simply playing in the garden with your new family member will help you stay active.
You never know... you might not want to give him back afterwards!
