Eco-Friendly Trends

Top 3 BEST all-purpose sustainable fashion brands!

Jul 25, 2020 10:59:38 PM / by Jason Siroishka

In a world where fast fast fashion has taken over, consumers are increasingly choosing clothing that is trendy and cheap, over options that are better quality, and perhaps more sustainable. Largely driven by the cheaper price tags that caters more towards the younger demographic, this widely-adopted consumer choice has the potential to have disastrous impacts on the environment over the medium to long-term. In order to combat this, I am proposing 3 fashion brands that exhibit eco-friendly, sustainability, and morally-sound practices/values that offer clothing that will last forever and keep your wardrobe fresh for any occasion!

1. Patagonia

Patagonia Canada Online - Best Price Guaranteed

Probably the most obvious candidate, Patagonia has been around for just under 50 years and has been operating in the space of sustainable fashion since then. While environmentalist and adventurist Yvon Chouinard started the company wanting to create better quality, longer lasting rock climbing equipment, he always thought he had a fiduciary responsibility to make his company as eco-friendly as possible and to reduce waste. Ever since then, Patagonia has been a purpose led company that operates sustainably throughout its supply chain and has numerous social impacts in place to better the world around them. One example of this is through the One Percent for the Planet initiative. Also founded by Chouinard, One Percent for the Planet is an organization that encourages businesses to donate 1% of its total sales to environmental groups.

The picture displays the Men's Capiline Cool Daily hoodie. Sleek and minimalistic, you could wear this to dinner, family events, or just for when you're lounging around the house! Made from quick-drying, moisture-wicking stretch fabric, this hoodie provides enhanced comfort in almost any environment. Its also made from 50-100% recycled material and Fair Trade Certified sewn, which means the people who made it earned a premium for their labor. While on the pricier side ($69 CAD), this hoodie is extremely high quality that will last you for years and years and even backed by Patagonia Ironclad Guarantee!

2. Levi's

Levi Strauss & Co. - Wikipedia

Levi's is another company that have exhibited sustainability/sustainable practices. Operating in the denim manufacturing space is extremely resource intensive, as it takes over 2,000 gallons of water to make just one pair of jeans. For years, Levi's has been focusing on trying to remove water water within the supply chain through its Water<Less collection, using up to 96% less water! Furthermore, they have numerous policies and commitments in place, including establishing a list of global sourcing and operating guidelines that help contribute to more responsible and eco-friendly business practices throughout the company.

3. Columbia

Columbia Logo | evolution history and meaning

Like Patagonia, Columbia is an outdoor apparel company that is trying to be more sustainable and eco-friendly throughout the business and its surrounding environment. Columbia really focuses on the supply chain, focusing on streamlining and innovating its production process. They do this through three main practices: Responsible down, outdry eco and rethreads. Innovating from the product design process allows Collumbia to be smarter and make their clothing more sustainable while simultaneously improving performance and decreasing degradation. A win-win.

The picture depicts Columbia's Men's Delta Ridge Down Jacket. Extremely lightweight and warm, this jacket can be warn in extreme cold, cold or even mild temperatures! Designed with 650 fill power down insulation and Omni-heat, the high quality materials make it extremely efficient (i.e. built with less materials) and long-lasting!

In conclusion, I have outlined 3 brands that practice ethical and sustainable practices while simultaneously offering good fashion and practical clothing! BUT! The list does not end here! I encourage you to start doing your own research, as there are countless other brands that also preach sustainability and sell clothes that are extremely pleasing to the eye and long-lasting!
