When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

The world has become more globalized when compared to many years ago. Due to a major growth in globalization, many people are migrating from their home to different cities or countries to study, work or explore any opportunities that may come in their way. So, if someone spoke about prominence of understanding other cultures or languages back then, people would not be able to perceive the relevancy of them. However, with so much advancement and people moving around being prevalent these days, understanding ways of the place that currently one lives in is very much essential. At the same time, due to vast usage of social media, "traveling the world" is becoming more popular and there are travel influencers and digital nomads who work while traveling. So be it anyone, if you want to travel around or live in a country, it is beneficial to understand their culture, language, and expressions. It is more convenient and helps in socializing when you make efforts to understand how the locals do. It is that effort to try would be appreciated and you would eventually belong to the place.

"Good mental health is absolutely fundamental to overall health and wellbeing," said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.

Mental health conditions impact all aspects of people's lives, from disrupting education to impairing work performance, to putting pressure on relationships and cut people off from their families. When extreme, it can even lead to suicide.  Mental health isn't just something that people who struggle with mental illness have to be aware of; we all need to pay heed to it. While it may be that some of us are more vulnerable than others, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. Lots of things can put a considerable strain on everyone's mental wellbeing.

TheMentalHealthStory: Normalising Conversations Around Mental Health

Feb 9, 2021 4:55:52 PM / by Sana Mahajan

Mental illness. Therapy. Depression, anxiety. Self-harm. Suicide.

Most of us shut our ears and squirm to these words. In many societies, these words are either forbidden or frowned upon with judgment. But the question is, why? People don’t hold off on sharing their physical ailments and there is certainly no hush-hush in going to the doctor for a broken bone or headache. Neither do people hide their ibuprofen prescription and nor do they hide the pain they are going through. But when it comes to matters of our mind, the rules are different.

The goal for most people is to lead a happy and comfortable life, and that honestly, starts with your head. How many of us have heard things like “it's all in your head”, “you think too much” or “you are just too sensitive, you need to be strong? And now, imagine someone came up to you and opened up the table to have a conversation to understand what you are feeling and why. What if your mind didn't have to fight that constant battle of discomfort and fear of judgment before sharing how you felt? What if you could simply reach out for help?

Society has repeatedly made people feel like there is something wrong with them. There is a stigma attached to matters of the mind and this is exactly why we need to end the stigma. There is no shame in having a mental illness or talking about it. There is no shame in seeking therapy and there is no shame in taking medication.

Large crowds, physical interaction and sweaty dance floors – not the ideal place for the common practice of social distancing. Nightclubs, bars and late-night music venues have been hit arguably the hardest during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many will be lucky to see any light at the end of this never-ending tunnel.
