New City, New Friends, Same Pandemic…

Moving location whether it be near, to a neighbouring city or to a city across the globe can be an exciting affair. It is often spurred on by the travel bug and the desire for individual to explore more than just what is outside the family homes front door. Whatever the reason for an individual relocation, there is no question it offers a fresh start, with new opportunities, prospects, adventures and most importantly, new friends on the horizon. However, sometimes this new adventure can be challenging, and periods of loneliness can become all too common. Finding friends when you have relocated to a new city/country can be a daunting task but throw pandemic into the mix and it becomes a whole different ballgame! But there’s good news, at the end of every rainbow there is a pot of gold and it turns out that people of Ireland have a reputation of being some of the most fun, friendly and polite people out there! I’m not being biased look….

Here are 4 of the best ways to meet new people in a new city:

1. Join an Organisation

SPEAK Dublin is a great way to meet people that have also relocated to Ireland and meet some local people. You can chat to new people, join language learning sessions, and engage in virtual events. You will feel welcomed and at home in your new city with the help of SPEAK.

2.Get Social with Social Media

It is important to exploit ALL social media when you move to a new place. Social media can be your best friend (cliché but true). One of the best ways to find friends in a new city is to join social media groups. Joining social groups on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Reddit is a great way to participate in conversations and connect with new people that you share common interests with.

3.Use Apps

Just like dating apps, there are numerous apps out there to help people make new friends. These apps can help you meet like-minded people and expand your social circle with little effort. If you’re a lover of sports try ATLETO, an app that helps you find people based on your favourite sports. For those looking for people interested in a certain hobby try Meetup, where you can categorise your hobbies and meet people based on similar interests. Meetup even matches you with local events happening near you. Bumble is more than a dating app; Bumble BFF is for connecting with others and creating friendships. All of these apps are free to use and will hopefully help you meet great people.

4.Volunteering

Whatever you are passionate about volunteering is a great way to give back to community but is also a fantastic way to meet new people, especially being new to an area. You will meet and connect with interesting, like-minded people. There are some great places where you can start volunteering in Dublin, have a look below.

Enjoy the adventure of experiencing a new city :)
