London is one of the top visited cities in the world. It’s rich history and culture makes it an attractive choice for all types of visitors, including students on a budget. A trip to the UK capital doesn’t have to break the bank and one can reasonably create an itinerary of low cost, fun, and interesting things to do that will leave you with positive long-lasting memories. I have compiled a list of the top things to do that are promised to be truly exceptional.
Sky Garden
Located in the heart of the city on Fenchurch Street, Sky Garden is London’s highest public garden. It is made up of 3 storey’s filled with South African and Mediterranean plants, observation decks, an open-air terrace, two restaurants, a bar and an insane panoramic view of the London city skyline.
If you're looking for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon, take some great pictures and take in the city, then Sky Garden is a great choice for you.
It won't cost you anything to visit the garden, but do bear in mind that visitors must book 3 days in advance on their website.

The Tate Modern
A trip to London is never complete without a visit to the Tate Modern. Inside this iconic venue, you’ll find some of the greatest International, contemporary works of our time. The venue hosts art by the greats such as Warhol, Dali and Hockney as well as some striking installations that you cannot miss.
If you have any interests in art or are looking to be impressed by some beautiful pieces, the Tate modern should definitely feature on your list on places to go.

God’s Own Junkyard
God’s Own Junkyard late owner, Chris Bracey, the ‘Neon Man’ got his start making signs for Soho’s strip clubs and brothels. His talents soon became recognised by Hollwood and he began making props for directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan.
God’s own Junkyard is neon and signage lover’s paradise. There is something for everyone here amidst the chaos. Every wall and all their crevices are covered with eye catching, retro and quirky pieces that will have you mesmerised for hours. However, if you do start to feel tired from wandering, they also have their own on-site café, called The Rolling Scones.
God’s Own Junkyard is open on weekends from Friday – Sunday and entry is free.
Location: Unit 12, Ravenswood Industrial Estate, Shernhall Street, Walthamstow, E17 9HQ. Nearest station is Walthamstow Central. See them on Google Maps
Wellcome Collection
Wellcome Collection is a great place for curious minds. The though provoking and gripping exhibitions are great for anyone interested in science or in seeing something unusual on their travels. This museum and library hosts a mixture of medical artefacts and original artworks exploring “ideas about the connections between medicine, life and art". There are a variety of historic and modern installation on show which represent different aspects of vulnerability and being human.
The museum is open every day except Mondays and it’s also free so you can spend as much time as you want wandering and discovering all that’s on offer.

Highgate Cemetery
Highgate cemetery, composed of various tombs, catacombs and mausoleums, is a great option for those who want a relaxing and picturesque educational tour.
The site is known for its status as a nature reserve and it is one of the Magnificent seven cemeteries in London. Walking around, you will not tire from its beautiful atmosphere.
Although a slightly unusual choice, you will not be disappointed. This tour comes highly recommended and offers great insights into the lives of the notable characters who are buried there, some of which include Karl Marx and Douglas Adams.
Unfortunately, this tour does not come free. However, at 4 pounds it’s not too unreasonable. Plus, all proceeds go into the maintenance of the site.

Travelling to London does not have to be expensive. These 5 (mostly) free actvities are great for anyone, but especially students who want to cheaply explore what London has to offer!
