The Most Beautiful Historic Parkland Estates in Dublin

We see those magnificent sprawling parkland estates in period films with their beautifully landscaped rose gardens and stunning interiors, but did you know you can visit plenty of them around Dublin? That’s right, Dublin has its fair share of grand estates dating back to times of the landed gentry. Below is a list of some of the grand houses you can visit and what they have to offer.

 

 

Killruddery

Situated between Bray and Greystones is the historic 800 acre estate of Kilruddery. The estate itself is a working, bio-diverse farm that is fully sustainable with its own apple orchard, vegetable patches and wild gardens. You can opt to explore a number of walks around the estates flowering woodland including an audio tour that will guide you through the surrounding 17th century lawns. If you’re a fan of history you can also go on an intimate tour of Kilruddery House that takes you through the active family home. Dive into 400 years of history and a glimpse into the lives of the Brabazon family. On this tour you will be shown the great archive of the family’s collected furnishings and artwork as well as access to the palacial Orangery. If you fancy it you can also treat yourself to the country kitchen cafe that serves fresh sandwiches and homemade baked goods. This estate is great for young families, couples and art history enthusiasts!

Russborough

Restored and managed by a board of trustees, Russborough House has evolved itself from grand home to a hub of education and history. Located close to the Blessington Lakes of Wicklow and Pollaphuca Reservoir, Russborough estate provides a wide range of outdoor activities and walks including a fairy trail, walled garden as well as a Birds of Prey Centre and abseiling facilities to name a few. As with most ‘Big House’ estates, a historical tour through the numerous parlours and rooms is available (subject to fees). For those interested in a little bit of retail, a gift shop is found within the house that offers a wide range of irish-made products from cards and candles to cosmetics and homeware. Russborough prides itself on education and active pursuits making it an ideal place for primary school tours and corporate retreats but don't let this deter you, it’s a great day out for everyone!

Powerscourt

Not every parkland estate has its own Japanese Garden let alone a stunning waterfall, but then again not every estate is Powerscourt in Enniskerry. This magnificent house is not far from the Sugar Loaf and it’s grounds were voted third for the Top 10 Gardens in the world by National Geographic.Located in Ireland’s Ancient East, you can enjoy the house or explore the beautifully landscaped grounds. Springtime and Summer are when best to visit as all the florals from cherry blossoms to magnolias will be ablaze. Powerscourt also offers a 5 star hospitality as well as Two Championship Golf Courses so why not make this visit a weekend getaway with that special someone?

Newbridge House & Farm

This mansion house estate near Donabate is a rare sight in Ireland as it is the only intact Gerogian build in the country and prides itself on the having one of the few remaining family museums. Originally built in 1790, the home retains all of its historic interior and furnishings with tours operating 5 times a day Tuesday- Sunday. The estate and park has many amenities including a large children's playground, farm, a gourmet cafe as well as woodland walks. You’ll be surprised to hear that the estate also has its own deer herd! However these deer are domestic and remain in an enclosed habitat. Over the years Newbridge has been re-developed to encourage more engagement with visitors leading to the opening of a gift shop and their croquet lawn. To help encourage the younger generations to engage with animals and nature, Newbridge has established a number of educational programmes including their Horse Grooming experience which provides demonstrations of equine care while allowing the children to have a hands-on animal care experience and interaction.

Airfield Estate

Our final pick but by no means our least, is Airfield Estate in Dundrum. If you love lavender fields then this estate is perfect for you. As with the other locations listed, this estate is a working ‘urban’ farm in Dublin with all it’s produce used as ingredients in food served at Airfield’s sustainable Overends Kitchen. If you are a foodie you can also become part of their Supper Club with numerous events being held throughout the year including Spring Equinox, Farmer Market and for any wine connoisseurs there is the Wine Club! Also available at Airifield is a Heritage Experience that immerses you in the history of the estate, with focal points on the Overend Family;their vintage car collection as well as their travels. The estate boasts an extensive number of gardens and lawns: there is the Bee Garden, Organic Food Garden, Walled Garden, Sunken Garden as well as a Woodland and Pond habitat. This location is easily accessible and only a short distance from Dundrum Village and the M50 so make sure to include the estate in your list of places to visit!
