5 Tips for Exploring Europe on a Cheap Budget!

Feb 28, 2020 4:40:29 PM / by Trevor Cochrane

Want to explore Europe but don’t have enough money? I urge you to read this entire blog post if you want to save hundreds of euros when exploring Europe. Europe is an amazing continent with so many different places to experience. The problem is that travelling from country to country is expensive! Sadly, I learned this the hard way and was not smart with my money on my first couple trips in Europe. I am writing this blog so others do not make the same mistake with their money and have the ability to visit as many different countries as possible on a cheap budget!

Tip 1: Booking Flights at the Right Time.

Ever heard the saying, ‘The Early Bird Gets the Worm?” This sums up the flight purchasing process when exploring Europe. It is so important that you plan trips weeks, or even months in advance. Booking round trip flights in advance can save hundreds of Euros compared to booking a flight a couple days before you travel. Ryanair is your best friend when looking for the cheapest flights, but that airline can only do so much when you want to fly in a couple days. A side note, when using Ryanair, remember to print your boarding pass and bring only a backpack sized carry on or your cheap flight will drastically increase in the price! Why not start looking for future trips now? Here is the Ryanair website link that will come in very helpful! Ryanair Cheap Flights click here

Tip 2: HOSTELS over Hotels

What’s the point in travelling if you plan on spending a lot of time in your room relaxing? This is why booking a Hostel should be the only option you think of when exploring Europe on a cheap budget. Trust me, 20 euros goes a long way and that is how much you can save a night booking a hostel over a hotel. I have had only good experiences with hostels. If you are struggling wrapping your head around the Hostel situation, try to have a glass half full mentality. It is a warm place for you to sleep and you could meet some new people. If you still can’t wrap your head around the hostel situation, just think of it as a way to ensure you explore the new country you’re in, instead of laying around the hotel room. Having trouble finding where to book hostels? Check out Hostel World Link where this website allows you to find a Hostel in any part of the world. Not to mention, if you book more than 7 days in advance, you get free cancellation! More incentive to plan ahead and follow tip 1!

Tip 3: Make your Own Food and Shop at the Grocery Store

I know it is nice to go out and eat at a fancy restaurant when travelling, but sometimes you just don’t have the budget for that. Good news is if you listened to tip 2 and booked the Hostel, you are able to buy microwaveable meals and cook them at the Hostel. If this isn’t the thing you would like to do, I strongly recommend buying your food items throughout the day at a grocery store. It’s very surprising how buying water and snacks at a grocery store can save a lot of money instead of buying it from a hot food lunch place. Also, if you chose to buy snacks at the grocery store, the euros you save can be spent on a dinner when you go out for the night. It is a clear win-win scenario! If you don’t believe me on how expensive eating out can be, watch this video and trust me, you will be at the nearest grocery store!

Tip 4: Use the app VIPSY when you go out!

A lot of people like to experience the night life atmosphere in new countries around Europe. I always find it fun to go out in different countries. The problem is that cover and drinks can get expensive. This problem can be solved with just one app. You will realize VIPSY is your best friend. Not only does it tell you the popular bars and night clubs for the night, but it also tells you the best drink deals and most importantly, gets you free cover! I always don’t understand why some bars and nightclubs charge so much for cover and sometimes it can ruin my night. From personal experience, once I downloaded VIPSY I was saving over 20 euros each night I went out. Trust me, 20 euros a night adds up quickly, which is why you should download this free app right as your reading this!

Tip 5: Enjoy the Little Things

I would just like to say sorry that the last tip I have is so cliché, but I cannot emphasize this enough. A good trip is only what you make of it and it has nothing to do with the type of budget you can afford. It is free to walk around and explore the country! If you are only worrying about the cheap budget you have on vacation, no matter how much you save, you will truly never experience Europe properly. I can’t reiterate this enough. Do not take exploring Europe for granted. Plus, following these 5 excellent tips, will allow you to enjoy a couple more excursions on the trips with all the money you saved!

Bonus Tip: You do not need to fly everywhere!

I know, this might not sound like the greatest tip, but trust me, this needed to be reiterated! Even with Ryanair and booking months in advance, flights can still be very expensive. Do your research! Sometimes you can take a train or even a bus to certain destinations. I understand this might not sound the most luxurious but you still get from Point A to Point B! Money is money and researching alternative ways to get to European destinations is worth your while. All it takes is a google search and you will be on your way!
