10 reasons to travel around Thailand

Thailand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, it is full of culture, gorgeously hot, and relatively inexpensive thus perfect for backpacking. Thailand and its islands are ideal for those of us that may be travelling on a budget and so here are my ten good reasons why I think everyone should choose to travel around Thailand.

  • Thai food is some of the best in the world. Get to experience the local delicious food, spices and fragrances with a wide variety of colours. Be sure to try the outdoor stalls selling their famous street food. Street food is fundamental to Thai culture and is available at all hours of the day and in my opinion, out of this world delicious. On most islands you can take authentic Thai cooking lessons from the best local chefs to help you recreate the amazing food, so you can take some of Thailand back home with you.

  • Thailand is a hub for travelling yogis – especially Koh Phangan as the foundations of the island is said to be entirely crystals – thus attracting healers and yogis from around the world. The island offers sunrise yoga classes where you can wake up early and enjoy a relaxing yoga session at sunrise over the white beaches and blue oceans – a must in my opinion, and a good break from the partying this island is most famous for.
  • You can hop on one of the many boat parties cruising around the Island of Phi Phi with your friends. Stop off at ‘Monkey Beach’ to see the island’s native cheeky monkeys – but watch out for your drink and your valuables – these animals have sticky fingers! At the next stop you can visit the iconic Maya Bay beach where the Leonardo DiCaprio movie ‘The Beach’ was filmed – the famously turquoise cove with white sand is enclosed by limestone cliffs is only accessible by boat. During the boat trip you can hop off and snorkel the reefs and see the beautifully coloured marine life below. Circle the island and see the most notable site on Koh Phi Phi – ‘The Viking Cave’ where a secret community of indigenous people live hunting and harvesting swiftlet birds’ nests which are a delicacy in China.

  • Experience the iconic nightlife that the island of Koh Samui has to offer. This pleasantly chaotic, energetic and vibrant island is home to Thailand’s greatest nightlife scenes. Explore the ‘strip’, and if you are adventurous enough – try one of Thailand’s infamous ‘buckets’.
  • Party on the island of Koh Phangnan which is home to the infamous half moon party located deep in the jungle or the full moon party, a monthly beach affair that has drawn backpackers since 1980’s.

  • Walk along the white beaches of Koh Samui where you can enjoy seaside massages. Bask in the hot weather which rests at around 35 degrees mid-summer and cool off in the pristine and turquoise waters.
  • Browse and shop in the famous night markets which can be found on almost every island. From clothing, shoes, bags, to ornaments, jewellery on to the food markets serving local delicacy’s. These night markets are an unforgettable experience and are a great opportunity for some excellent discounts.

  • Get to rent out motorbikes and further explore every corner of the islands – explore the many hidden beaches and coves away from the main touristy areas. Hike through the jungle to find the many beautiful hidden waterfalls scattered through the islands.
  • Enjoy Thailand’s culture and visit one of the many giant buddha statues scattered around the country. These are incredibly popular landmarks throughout the country with every town having at least one buddha statue. The largest of which is the ‘Great Buddha of Thailand’ which stands 92 metres tall, located in Ang Thong province 140 kilometres north of Bangkok.

  • Get PADI certified as you take scuba diving lessons on the island of Koh Tao. Sign up in one of the many notable schools on the island, gain experience from some of the most experienced scuba diving instructors in the world. Dive in what is recognised around the world as one of the most beautiful diving spots. Known to have a very diverse and rich underwater marine life, Koh Tao – thought to be one of the best (and the cheapest) places to learn how to scuba dive.
