Are you bored of being cooped up at home, listening to the latest coronavirus stats and running out of Netflix watches? I feel ya! Lockdowns are tough and draining both physically and mentally. In this post, I will highlight the power of outdoor activities and my tips for coping with lockdowns in a safe, cheap and fun way!

1. Hikes

Lace up those hiking boots, pack that backpack and get going! Hikes were one of my favourite ways to pass the days during lockdown. I’m lucky to have a variety of hikes near me and in keeping with Government guidelines, I urge you to get out and get active on hikes near you! If the situation allows I recommend you try The Hill of Tara and The Howth Cliff Walk.

The Hill of TaraHill of Tara hike near me with friends

One of Meath’s most famous landmarks and my top choice whatever the weather! A place of magic and mystery located in the heart of the Boyne Valley and an incredible spot to catch positive vibes. This 5km trail incorporates lots of muck, sheep, druids and breath-taking views. On a clear and sunny day, visitors are lucky to set eyes on Newgrange, another famous landmark on the far side of the Valley.

In terms of practicalities, car parking is free but it can be difficult to find a space during peak times – go early to avoid this and don’t forget to pull up your handbrake! The café on the Hill is an absolute must post-hike treat. During lockdowns they operate a takeaway service and have recently opened a wood-fired pizza and crêpe cabin. My personal fave is the ‘Tara Special’. Check out their menu here!

Howth Cliff Walk

Another hit on my hike list! Scenic, steep and spectacular, the Howth Cliff path loop will be sure to blow off your lockdown cobwebs. Follow the green arrows starting at Howth DART Station and enjoy all this seaside village has to offer. This hike is about 6km and of moderate ascent, taking about 2 hours to complete. If you’re struggling, think of the tasty fish and chips at Beshoff Bros. afterwards…YUM!

2. Nature Walks

If you’re more of a rambler than a hiker, nature walks are a great outdoor activity for changing your lockdown mindset. There’s nothing quite like fresh air, birds singing and blue skies…except getting out of the house safely, which nature walks accomplish too! Ireland, true to its name, is littered with nature walks and beautiful scenery. Let me share some of my favourites with you.

Trim Castle River Walk

Enjoying one of the nature walks through the heritage town of Trim

A hidden gem in the Royal County! This path embodies nature as it loops around the historic ruins of the castle, the River Boyne and the green plains of the heritage town. Offering trails of various lengths, this nature walk will allow you to leave the nerve-wrecking world of the pandemic behind and sooth your mind for a while. The drove of donkeys munching away in the field beside the castle are sure to bring a smile to your face!

Girley Bog Eco Walk

Nature walk through Girley Forest

This trail covers varying landscapes of forest and bogland. Old boots are a necessity and a dry day would be a big help. A wonderful variety of plant and animal life are present at Girley and can be seen on the interpretative panels as you go. This tranquil trail will put you in touch with nature and act as a tonic to allow you escape from the busy, but boring, world of lockdown. Girley is a remote location, situated a couple of miles outside Kells town. If I were you I’d take a picnic to allow you to truly enjoy your lockdown day out.

3. Beach Trips

Getting active on the beach

Last but by no means list and one of the most satisfying outdoor activities is a long, sandy walk on the beach. No matter the location, the salty air and deep, loose sand beneath your feet will fill your mind and body with positive ions. If you’re feeling adventurous why not run into the sea and wash your boredom away?! The crashing of the waves on the shore and the coming and going of the tide soothes the mind and is a reminder of the better days to come (sneak peak below!). Find your nearest beach here!

Regardless of where you live outdoor activities will induce positive, uplifting and mood-boosting attitudes. Even if restrictions prohibit travelling, walking in your locality has powerful effects on your mind and body.

For now my friends, get outdoorsy and stay safe!
