It's been a little over 365 days since the first lockdown and the main thing I've learned is taking the little parts of my day for granted. Now we're all stuck within our 5km radius and no place to go.
Thankfully, we at Craving Dublin have you covered. Here's our guide to Dun Laoghaire and all the places you can still enjoy.
JJ Darboven-Café
A hot beverage specialist, known for their variety of delicious in house roasted coffee. Grab a coffee from their wide selection, grab a treat from their bakery or simply buy a bag of coffee for your home brew set up/. Whatever it may be, they are definitely worth a visit in your 5km journey.
Le chocolat de Frèd-Café
This French chocolate café is a chocolate lovers heaven. From their wide variety of baked goods, to beverages made from the richest melted chocolate, you can pretty much get anything you want smothered in chocolate from their seemingly endless fountain. If you’re a chocolate lover, this is definitely a place to visit.
Teddy’s Ice Cream
A Dun Laoghaire institution at this point, less and less a business but more of a right of passage whenever visiting the seaside town. Teddy’s is a local staple, from their iconic vans scattered around Dun Laoghaire to their base of operations around the corner from Peoples Park. I honestly don’t think you can go for a walk in Dun Laoghaire without getting an ice cream from here. Otherwise, you might anger the locals. Would not recommend.
Scrumdiddly's
Walking into this shop is like walking into a section of the Willy Wonka chocolate factory. You want a crepe? Sorted. How about a waffle? Sorted. Ice cream in a tub? Done. Ice cream in a cone? Obviously.
With any sweet, chocolate bar, candy and sauce under the sun at your fingertips, the possibilities are endless. Just be sure to walk a 5km because this spot isn’t going to be helping your diet anytime soon.
Dall' Italia Pasta Bar
A quint little Italian restaurant on main street Dun Laoghaire. When indoor seating was available this place boasted their extensive fresh pasta collection. Choose a pasta, choose a sauce choose our toppings truly having some amazing Italian dishes your way. Currently still taking orders for their fresh pasta, definitely something to consider when you want to elevate your home cooking.
Fish Shack
Maybe it's just me, but a walk by the seaside calls for fish and chips. If you think the same, the Fish Shack is the place for you. Having two locations in Dun Laoghaire, one around the corner from the Peoples Park and another on the East Pier, it's almost like a requirement to walk the pier and to get your fish fix in. Pre or post walk, who cares, we don’t judge. This spot will certainly bring you back to those Summer days by the seaside we are all longing for.
Soup
Soup is a delicious ramen bar just opposite St.Michael’s Hospital. With everything from traditional tonkatsu ramen to some of their more innovative dishes like the halloumi spice bag. A pity we can’t sit in and dine, but definitely somewhere you should consider ordering from if you’re in the area. You will not regret this Dun Laoghaire recommendation.
The Sunshine Café and Restaurant
Just opposite Soup, is the quaint Sunshine Café and Restaurant. Click and Collect services now available, soups, salads, sandwiches and more. This slice of Dun Laoghaire is a top contender for a takeout lunch. 10/10 would highly recommend.
