Work-from-home has become the new way for many students and professionals. While at the beginning of the pandemic many people may have been comfortable working and studying from the kitchen table, the novelty has now worn off. It’s time to take the plunge and reorganise your house to give yourself a work space, a functional desk and a chair that won’t have you bent double.

The following are some options for an effective and efficient work/study from home experience that will promote separation of work and play. No one wants to eat dinner at their office desk.

A desk makes an office and is quintessential for defining a work space. It might seem like a big purchase but as you can see below, those on a smaller budget don’t have to compromise on quality or comfort when searching for a desk. There is also a more expensive option with more features if you need a work-from-home setup for the foreseeable future.

Where else would we go for reasonable priced furniture other than IKEA. Coming in at just €34, the Linnmon/Adils range offers a comfortable work space without blowing the budget or eating up too much floor space.

This desk would be perfect for a student that needs a study space in their bedroom, or young professionals with limited space in their apartment. The dimensions of 120x60 cm means that you can tuck this table in the corner of the room and finally liberate your kitchen table from your laptop and monitor setup.

Let’s look at some mid-range desks, i.e. somewhere in the €100-€200 price range. The Bea Desk can be found on the Harvey Norman website for €159. This is a step up from the budget IKEA option and looks much more expensive than its reasonable price tag. The desk comes with 3 inset drawers so that your desk space remains organised and not an eye sore in your living room!

If you’re looking to step up your home office but still want to match your décor, this desk is a great option as it has several colours to choose from including the black and brown combo pictured above, a white top and black legs, an all black option and an all white option. There’s a combination to suit any style of room and personal preference.

For those with a higher budget, I would recommend investing in a standing desk. We weren’t built to sit for 8 hours a day, and a standing desk can give you the opportunity to stretch your legs while you’re on a zoom call, or even go as far as installing a desk treadmill! This desk from IKEA will set you back anywhere from €209 (Skarsta) to €595 (Bekant) depending on the size of the desk you require. But if this is going to be you’re set up for a while, you can consider it the money you save from not having to pay for someone to massage the knots out of your back. For the lower cost table, the dimensions are  160x110cm meaning whether you want to buy the budget or the more premium desks, you can assure that your desk won’t dominate your living room or bedroom. For our last option we are going to look at the top end of the price range, and see what features you can get if you’re working with no upper limit. With the Cemtrex SmartDesk, starting at $2,299 you can enjoy a height adjustable table with a fixed 3 monitor setup. The desk also includes a built in wireless charging pad for gadget and headphones so no more wires needed! Self-proclaimed as an “all-in-one powerhouse”, this desk will make your workspace into a hi-tech dream.
