Keep it simple

A delicious picnic doesn’t require you to make everything from scratch. Shop-bought snacks and finger foods are the perfect addition to complement your main dishes - crisps, nuts, fruit are just some examples. Simple foods like salads, sandwiches or cold pasta dishes are all great choices.

Comfort is key

We all know that Irish weather is not the most reliable when making outdoor activity plans, so don’t forget to take this into consideration. Pack sunscreen and bug repellent to stay safe in the sun. Plastic lining (such as bin bags or an old shower curtain) under your picnic blanket will prevent dampness seeping through your blanket.

Cool and fresh

Picnic baskets might be the most aesthetic option, but in terms of practicality a cooler box is the best option for keeping your food fresh in transit. If you don’t have one, freeze some water bottles and put them around your dishes to keep them cool. The water bottles will double up as hydration as they melt in the sun!

Bring the flavour

What might seem like an obvious addition but are easily missed, make sure you have all the seasonings and condiments you need for your dishes - salt, pepper, spices, etc. In terms of salad dressing, avoid anything that is cream based and instead opt for oil-based dressings. Dairy products will not keep well in the heat.

Pack and prepare

Prepare and assemble as much of your food as possible in advance so that it is ready to eat upon arrival. This will ensure that your picnic is as fresh and hassle-free as possible. Pack heavier containers on the bottom and lighter/smaller foods on top to avoid unfortunate spills. Of course it’s important to leave no trace, so bring bin bags to gather up all your rubbish and leftover food to make collecting your rubbish quick and easy.

Dig in

Make sure that you have everything you need to serve and prepare your food. You can buy cute picnic kits online like this one that have all the essentials. Mason jars are a great alternative for all sorts of foods, drinks, and sauces. They are airtight and you can eat straight from the jar as long as you have your cutlery. A cutting board and good quality knife are also picnic essentials for any bread or cheese you bring along.

Keep it clean

Hygiene during food preparation is a given, but make sure to bring supplies to freshen up while eating too. Baby wipes are ideal for on-the-go clean-ups, and hand sanitizer is an essential during COVID-19 times.

Bugs at bay

Sweet drinks and cocktails may be refreshing, but they are also a surefire way to attract wasps and bugs. A simple solution is to cover your bottle/glass with a cupcake case and stick a straw through it to ensure unwanted visitors don't get into your beverage of choice.
