What are Irish people watching? A guide to the best streaming services

Posted by Ciaran Clancy on Feb 21, 2021 7:46:28 AM

Aloe Blacc once said ‘What do you actually need? food, clothing and shelter. Everything else is entertainment.’

Of course during a pandemic, the only form of entertainment we can safely facilitate is from the comfort of our own home. Nothing beats watching our favourite TV shows which we become hopelessly obsessed with and watch in single sittings, followed by lengthy discussions with our friends and families about the gripping conclusion.

So when you settle down for the evening with your blankets and your profiteroles, hopefully this will give you a better idea of the different streaming services that you can access, each of which provides a plethora of mind-numbing entertainment.

1)NowTV-€7.50/month

With Now TV you can watch some amazing content like Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Euphoria and It’s a Sin. The Entertainment pass gives you access exclusively to boxsets and live channels, so you only pay for what you’re interested in watching and not spending extra money on sports channels, movies etc.

The downside is that in many cases Now TV has buffering problems and low quality visuals. Also your favourite programmes might only be available for a certain time period and can suddenly disappear from the library! The selection is significantly more limited than what you can expect from the other streaming services.

2)Prime Video-€5.99/month

Amazon has their own streaming service which I tested using their seven day free trial, though I had to set a strategic reminder to cancel it and avoid paying for an entire month. When subscribing for Prime Video content, I suppose you need to ask yourself the question, ‘could you validate giving more money to Jeff Bezos?’

My expectations weren’t very high, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover some really stylish, edgy series that are worth dipping into, and I could definitely recommend this streaming service for young adults that enjoy dystopian themed shows like The man in the High Castle, which depicts what the world would look like if Jeff Bezos took over.

While Prime Video Includes an Amazon prime subscription with other benefits such as free two-day shipping, there still exists a lot of content that requires extra purchases to be made, so the service is slightly deceptive (how unexpected). Note that for you Tolkien fans, there may be an exciting LOTR prequel on the way, where Jeff Bezos will inevitably play Gollum.

3)DisneyPlus-€6.99/month

Before Disney plus existed you could access plenty of its content on Netflix, but then Bob Iger stripped everything from the service and created your very own virtual Disneyland of nostalgic and in some cases questionably insensitive motion pictures. From the creators of completely immoral films from the 1950s, On Disney+ you can also watch hot new shows like The Mandalorian and WandaVision. Okay that’s pretty much it.

Disney+ has something for everybody, whether you are a raging Pixar fanatic, a secret fan of the Disney classics or a National Geographic nerd.

Maybe you are one of the many millions of Marvel disciples that are not confused by the crossovers. Perhaps you religiously consume Star Wars content, unphased by the ruin that Disney has brought upon it. The only question is, are you willing to spend seven quid a month for something you will barely use?

This may not be a conundrum for much longer however with the introduction of Disney Star, an exciting new development that will take the focus away from the Disney element and towards the plus symbol. Yes, that tiny cross will soon hold a great deluge of tv shows, an emblematic gesture of this entertainment giant’s tactical manoeuvres into the industry. Prepare to see the other streaming services quiver with fear.

4) Netflix-€7.99/month

Netflix accounts are a staple of the Irish household. If you don’t have one yourself you’re definitely leaching off somebody else. :)

Netflix is the Gold standard of streaming services, a behemoth in the industry with endless content that stretches into eternity like a great void. The slight issue with this is the significant challenge of finding actual good content to watch, which is akin to panning gold particles from gravel in the Sierra Nevada.

There are plenty of amazing series provided by this service, such as Stranger Things, Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, 13 Reasons Why, Black Mirror, The Last Kingdom, The Good Place, The Medicis, Sex Education and The Crown.

You could spend a lifetime perusing this Xanadu of entertainment. Just try not to lose the remote down the back of the couch or you won’t be able to stop from one show to the next.

Thank you for taking the time to read my reviews of each of the main streaming services, I hope you found some light relief and maybe even learned something new? Now go watch some more TV! (Before your seat gets cold).
