Thanks to Ireland’s unique location in the wild Atlantic Ocean, Ireland has access to some of the richest fishing grounds in Europe. This means it is in close proximity to a diverse range of fresh, premium quality seafood including Irish whelks, crab, oysters, lobster, scallops and langoustines. Additionally, Ireland’s marine territory covers an area of 880,000 sq kms. It is no surprise that the Irish seafood economy is worth €1.26 billion, up from €1.09 billion in 2020, representing a growth in GDP of 15.3%.

Ireland has huge potential in the seafood industry and the Irish government recognises this, with continued investment into the sector over the years. In 2021, the government increased investment in the seafood sector by 11%, amounting to investment of €233 million.

Ireland is a pioneer in organic aquaculture and as a proud member of the European Union, Ireland was the first country to certify salmon and mussels to the EU organic standard. Not only that, 100% of Irish Salmon is certified organic. Bord Bia works closely with the Irish seafood industry to guarantee high food safety standards, through their membership of Origin Green, Ireland’s leading edge sustainability programme. Through Origin Green, Irish seafood producers commit to delivering improved performances in areas such as raw material sourcing, emissions, energy, waste, water, biodiversity and social sustainability

Why is this valuable to you in the French market?

France is Ireland’s most important seafood market and top export partner with a value of €124 million in 2021, with main export species including salmon, oysters and crab.
