Do you ever feel like you could do more to live sustainability ? Here are some quick and easy tips to help you become part of this movement!

Make the switch to greener goods

The passion and hunger for sustainable products is only growing stronger which means there are so many options to choose from. Sustainable products are usually made in an energy efficient manner using natural and organic ingredients offering health benefits that you would not find in most other products. By substituting for these products, you will ultimately help to conserve natural resources, reduce your energy consumption and protect the environment.

Let’s take a look at some items that are part of your daily routine and see if we can give them a stylish sustainable glow up!

  • Toothbrush - with the upgrade to the bamboo toothbrush  you can wake up and go to bed knowing that you are making an effort to become more sustainable! This product is 100% recyclable with the handle composing of bamboo timber and the bristles made of Nylon 6. To dispose you simply return the bamboo to the earth and recycle the Nylon 6 bristles.
  • Shampoo - swap to using shampoo and conditioner bars instead of those bulky plastic shampoo bottles taking up an obnoxious amount of space in your bathroom. Derived from natural ingredients with recyclable packaging, one bar is the equivalent to 3 bottles of your standard shampoo bottle. It will not only save you money but removing the liquid from the product, one bar saves up to 1 litre of water!

Save the sea, go plastic free!

Making the gradual shift towards zero plastic can seem daunting but it is all part of a bigger picture.

Think before you buy! Many brands are guilty of over packaging by offering products in packets twice the size of the product itself. This excess waste and release of harmful toxins it contains is something that can be avoided. As a consumer you have a great purchasing power and with this great power comes great responsibility. You have the capability to influence and help to reduce the over-packaging on goods by writing to companies and expressing your concern or buying alternatives.

Buying from these brands allows you to reduce your own waste as well as support a brand that too is working towards greater sustainability, it’s a win- win! So why not do your bit and make the effort to not only reduce plastic in your life but encourage others to do the same?

Cut down your energy consumption

It’s easy to forget just how much energy you consume, from cooking to washing clothes and even to charging your phone, all tasks consider necessary as part of your daily routine. But what about all the energy you are unknowingly wasting? Just think about the last time you left your T.V on standby or a light on when you left the room. Although you may think these are only small bad habits, they add up to contribute a large amount of everyday energy consumption

Start with some simple ways to reduce your impact:

  • Get rid of the tumble dryer- It’s an energy hogger! Your tumble dryer eats a lot of energy wheres a clothes rack eats none!
  • Cold is the new warm- Wash your clothes in cold water where possible to conserve 90% of the energy it takes to heat the water. Most of the time a lower temperature is actually recommended!
  • Turn the right light on – Try replacing your lights it with an eco-friendlier option like LED bulbs. Not only do these bulbs use less electricity but they are also brighter than regular bulbs! BONUS!
  • Unplug and Stay Snug!- There’s absolutely no need to keep an appliance or device plugged in when you’re not using it! Try switch it off instead of leaving it on standby. And the next time you turn on the heating use the timer and grab your favourite blanky to keep warm instead!

Water - Drink it from the tap!

One of the easiest and most overlooked ways to become more sustainable is simply just about drinking water. How often do you buy bottled water when you can just drink from the tap? The dependence of bottled water has reached new highs with over 1 million plastic bottles purchased every minute on beverages alone. Not only is this dependence contributing to the overall abundance of plastic waste in circulation, but the purchase of bottled water also has a number of environmental costs linked to it; the manufacturing of these bottles produces 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year!

If you are in two minds about taking this step let me debunk two very common obstacles:

  • Bottled water tastes better than tap water – If you don’t like the taste of your tap water, you should consider investing in a filtration system. Although it might be a considerable expense at the time you will save money and help the environment in the long run!
  • Bottled water is cleaner than tap water – This is a myth! In fact, tap water is tested numerous times throughout the day to ensure it is clean and safe to drink.

There are no drawbacks to this switch so the make better choice and stay hydrated with your own reusable water bottle!

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Instead of throwing things away, start to think of how you can up-cycle. Get creative and start reusing items for different things. Take that jam jar you are going to throw out, why not transform this into a new storage container?

The way you dispose of your waste has a huge impact on the environment. The flora and fauna of the world need your help to survive! When you fail to separate your waste from paper to plastic to glass you run the risk of ultimately polluting our seas and soils. To protect the environment, make the conscious effort to reduce your waste and recycle all that you can. This is as easy as buying different bins for different materials, a small step that only needs to be taken once to improve your sustainability forever. Maybe even try composting, reducing your waste and helping you to become more self – sufficient!
