Are you an exchange student or a person who doesn't even know the North Side? The area of unknown and mystery. Here's my tips and tricks on where to get the cheapest drinks, the coolest spots, and the little areas in between. All from the eyes of an exchange student. Yes, you may wonder, "how could an exchange student that's only been here a short time know what there is to do?" But listen to me, when you're in the North, you learn quite a lot in a small time. When I landed in Dublin, I didn't even know there would be stark differences between the North and South sides. They both have their unique charm which adds to the fun of finding out non touristy places to go to. Here are my, top choices for the North side of Dublin.
La Pausa is located right up from Parnell Street and easily spotted amongst all the buildings around it. Don't let the dark outside shell of it fool you. The inside is a cute cheap cafe that offers vegan and gluten free food. They have an array of items like croissants or muffins to full on meals like an Irish breakfast or even burgers. The inside is a cozy casual vibe and the charm it has is one that makes you feel at peace. I've spent many days sitting here people watching or doing homework. Prices range from €2-€9. So if you're on a budget or want somewhere chill to sit at, this is the place for you.
2. Mayes Pub
Good old Mayes. Where you walk in and feel just like a local. If you want a relaxed atmosphere that gives you the tranquility and peace you want, Mayes is for you. There's not much to it except feeling like you are one amongst the rest. It's a friendly atmosphere and they make sure you are treated fairly. Where it's never busy and the locals make sure you're welcomed. The drinks are cheaper than the usual expensive ones you'll find when you get to the central part of the city. The vibe is relaxed and there's no rush. Drinks range from €4-€9 depending on what you get. So sit down and play a game of pool with your friends or one of the locals that wants to challenge you. You'll surely feel at home.
3. Hugh Lane

Hugh Lane is an art gallery that has stained glass rooms to Francis Bacon paintings to Ancient Egypt sculptures. The best part is, is that it's FREE! Yes that's right. You can happily just walk right in and look at the art without having to pay. It's very aesthetically pleasing inside and is a nice activity to do with a date or if you simply enjoy art, this is the place for you. It's a semi hidden gem and can be easily missed if not looking out for it. I've gone here quite a few times myself and never can get bored.
4. Eurogiant Parnell Centre

For someone like me who is new to the city and living here, Eurogiant has been my go to life saver. The quick deals and cheap things to buy, it's been my life raft when needing cheap groceries. With prices sometimes cheaper than Tesco, it has become a staple for me with finding little knick knacks here and there. Having a new store open up on Parnell, it really has become my second home. Items are as low as €1 or sometimes as "high" as €5. It really helps students out that are studying abroad and it has become a great cheap alternative for items.
5. Thai Spice

Out of all the Thai food restaurants I have been at in Dublin, Thai Spice has my heart. If you like cheap, big portioned Thai food then this place is for you. You can easily miss it if you don't pay attention but the cute interior and amazing food will surely gain your attention. It's theme is laid back and a very homey feel to it. The workers are super nice and are very attentive. A great place for if you want a nice hardy meal that you can pack home with you. The prices are reasonable and the portions are huge so if you want to save money, then for sure split a meal with a friend! Prices range from €2-€15. You won't want to miss out on this delicious restaurant.
