1. Cost of accommodation, the major chunk of your budget.
If you’re planning to explore more of Dublin by living off-campus, then this might interest you. I feel living independently by taking some extra efforts to find a nice house as per your choice should be a part of your ‘education overseas’ experience. And if that’s going to save some extra bucks then, why not? By this time, you must have been told already that Dublin is expensive city to rent an accommodation.
On campus accommodation comes to will cost you more or less €1,000 euros per month irrespective of college. Off campus is where you can try your luck. I’m quoting a general pricing here: The rent would cost around 450 to 900 euros, where 650 to 900 would be your zone if you’re planning to get a private room excluding owner occupied places. That option would bring your expense down to a bit.
But.. there’s a catch; generally, with prices below 600, they’ll ask you to pay the bills. And for those, keep approximately €100-150 aside per months, just to be safe. Also, city and north Dublin are the places you can get really inexpensive deals.
2. Stressing about cost and availability of groceries needed to cook mom’s signature dish?
Availability is not an issue, you can get almost everything in Dublin. If you’re going to compare costs in INR then comes the first rule i.e. don’t do it; because you’re just going to get shocked every time you go shopping. But as you’re going to finance yourself in INR and just to give you a rough idea, take approximately double or 2.5 times the cost of shopping in India for groceries.
However, that’s just to get a rough idea. €100-150 is more than enough for food and groceries per person per month if you know basics of how to cook and do that every day. But if you’re planning to eat outside more often then that would cost more.
3. Initial months are going to be expensive.
Your costs except rent per month could be around €1200-1500 for initial 2 months of time if you’re coming from warmer regions of India. Because there are many things you’ll need to buy here according to the weather conditions of Dublin. It is better to purchase clothing here because if you’re coming in September, its going to be very cold and windy soon, trust me.
So, invest wisely in your ‘Shopping for Dublin’ list before coming here.
4. Costs associated with your ‘Party animal’ mode.
No matter you’re a party animal or not; it’s worth the experience to visit a nice bar, pub or club in Dublin. But if you like pubs or clubbing overall, which you eventually and most likely will in Dublin, it’s better to keep a budget for it, right?
On a serious note, you’ll have to get into some social gathering as per your preference at least few times a month. So regarding that, few things to keep in mind are:
Night links (Dublin Bus) work on Friday and Saturday.
Cabs could be expensive if you’re alone. And,
Now if you’re from Mumbai, you already know this; Drinks are expensive in clubs. But the good part is you can try really nice drinks here.
So, if you’re like ‘party animal on budget’, that’s another 150-200 bucks.
5. Let’s tally the balance sheet, Shall we?
So, talking about overall cost of living per month except rent it should fit around 300 to 500 bucks. Except initial two months of course.
All the calculation are very generic based on most common budget heard by me and my own budget. There is always a chance to save more or to spend more; so this might not me an ideal draft for you. But ‘general idea’ about how my expense sheet will look like is among highly discussed topics.
