Pro-cras-tin-ation ... How to avoid avoiding!

Pro-cras-tin-ation ... also known as I'll get to it later ... just not now, definitely not at this moment in time.

With all this "extra" time on our hands and all the fabulous suggestions pouring in everyday, I can’t help but feel I’m not making the most of this “downtime” ... I’m just about doing what I’m supposed to do and as time goes on, I feel my motivation to keep productive is slipping with each day.
What to do?

Well, here are three suggestions ... I know we have (mostly) heard all of these before but sure why not review them? Lets avoid some tasks while learning how to stop avoiding tasks!

Mark Twain: Eat the frog.
And no we don't mean Kermit!

When applied to our task list (assuming we have taken the time to write a task list) ... its best to do the worst item first.  In so doing, we will have finished the least appealing task on our list and the rest of our tasks will appear less intimidating.  We could feel energized (relieved?) and move onto the rest of our tasklist with vigor.

Lets Think about Tomatoes.
Nope, its not lunch / dinner / snack time yet!

If we break our to-do's into smaller chunks and do those smaller tasks, they will add up to the completion of a large task.

But how do we keep ourselves focused and on track?
Francesco Cirillo developed a time management method called "The Pomodoro Technique".  He recommends breaking down tasks into short timed intervals called pomodoros separated by short intervals, and keeping track of the number of completed pomodoros.

He used his kitchen timer, shaped like a tomato to keep track of the time, hence the name.

Reward & Positive Self Talk

We are all in strange and difficult times right now, hardly anyone has  experience of this kind of worldwide shutdown.  Our daily routines have been changed dramatically and we are expected, on some level, to thrive in these circumstances with all this "extra" time.  The reality is, our days still have the same number of hours as before, and we can only do so much with those hours.

It is a good idea to take a moment and listen to our inner voices and encourage ourselves to be kind to ourselves.  After all, we are talking to the one that has been there from the very beginning...
