How to Celebrate National Avocado Day

If you stop someone on the street and ask them what their favorite holiday is, most would probably say Christmas, Easter, their birthday. But if you stopped me, it’s definitely National Avocado Day. July 31st to be exact and what better time of year to love these delicious fruits (yes, they are fruits)? Bask in the hot July sun, then enjoy some avocado treats, such as toast, guacamole, a face mask, desserts, and cocktails. National Avocado Day should be widely celebrated. Why not? A day dedicated to just avocados? Who wouldn’t love this holiday?

To prepare you for this once a year fiesta, I’m going to share with you my secrets on how to best celebrate this wondrous fruit, the Avocado.

1. Preparation is key.

The first and best thing to do: go to your local grocer and buy avocados. And do some mental math (barely) to figure out how and when you will be using them. I think we can all agree an avocado is perfect on a specific day, so ~feel~ your avocados and know which ones are the best! An avocado oxidizes very easily, so it can be hard to keep track of when you are going to use them. One of my secrets is refrigerating a used avocado to keep it fresher longer. That way, the half of avocado you used to make your avocado toast that morning can be used to compliment the tacos you are going to make that night. You can even save it for future mornings of more avocado toast!

2. The night before…

Did you know that avocados are super good for your skin? Like, really good. Just go into your web browser and search for an avocado face mask, whip some up, lather it on your face, and chillax… you’ve a got big day coming up. I suggest putting some cucumbers on your eyes too, so you have a useful snack in case you get hungry. My favorite avocado mask is linked below: http://www.beauteous.co.nz/beauty-advice/beauty-tips/4-homemade-avocado-face-mask-recipes/

It’s hard to believe that an avocado can do this, but it contains essentials that complement the skin such as iron, calcium, potassium, copper, magnesium and more! It even contains vitamins A, E, B, and K with some unsaturated fats! Amazing! Avocados can give you some intense moisturization. A day out in the sun in the middle of July just before this big holiday will require you to use some avocados on your face.

3. Get your work out in

I have to say, avocados and working out go hand in hand. Why not get your day started by a nice work out? Avocados are a superfood, meaning they help with weight loss, lowering cholesterol, and reducing risks of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Avocados are a blessing in disguise, there’s no better way to get all the benefits out of avocados than after you work out. So, get your inner groove on and prepare for the upcoming day.

4. HAPPY NATIONAL AVOCADO DAY!!

Start by going to your favorite brunch place, because everyone now-a-days carries THE avocado toast. So good, so fresh, so creamy, these avocados were meant for you. No matter where you are in the world, you will find some amazing places to help you celebrate. For instance, I am currently stationed in Dublin and cannot wait to share some of my favorite places to eat some scrumptious avocado. Platform 61 serves some great toast over on South William Street, although it is pretty hefty in price. If you’re looking for a cheap place to satisfy your craving, try The White Moose Café on Phibsborough. Maybe you want a pile of some good stuff on top of your avocados. In that case, go to Bibi’s on Emorville Avenue in Dublin 8.

5. Party Prep

Because it’s your favorite holiday, you’re throwing a party. Everything is made of, or resembles, an avocado. Tell your friends, family, neighbors, and the stray cat about it. They can all bring something to ease your stress. Avocados can be used in all sorts of ways, not just the avocado toast and guacamole. Think decadent desserts, a hearty burrito bar, even avocado cocktails. Some classic desserts and cocktails turned avocado style are linked below:

It will for sure be a night to remember.

6. Celebrate!

Now that everything is set up, it’s time for you to celebrate with everyone you invited. Play some games (avocado trivia, duh), share some avocado memories, and think about all the great things that resemble avocados. You can decorate your room the classic green, yellow, and brown. Even dress yourself to resemble your favorite food. Find a costume or just something in your closet. Have a dress code. Your friends may hate you in the moment, but they’ll look back on this and see what fun it is to celebrate. There’s nothing better to do!

It’s hard to conclude talking about avocados because of how great they are. There are so many different ideas to share and things to copy or make your own. Try some DIY’s, have some fun, and make it a memorable July 31st! I hope this helps you celebrate the best holiday!
