Why Irish seafood?
A small island located in the wild Atlantic Ocean, Ireland’s unique waters make for excellent seafood produce. The Atlantic Ocean is home to a diverse selection of pelagic fish, salmon and shellfish that is renowned for its premium taste and quality. Ireland’s fishing territory is over 880,000km2 and therefore has highly valuable potential to continue to develop Ireland’s seafood industry and supply to overseas markets. This comes as no surprise then that Irish Seafood exports were worth €485 million in 2021, a 6% increase from 2020, highlighting the excellent reputation that Irish seafood has on a global scale.
Bord Bia and the French market
Bord Bia serves as the link between Irish food, drink and horticulture suppliers with customers throughout the world. We use local market insight and experience to enable sustainable growth for Irish suppliers and local retailers. We can help you find the right supplier for both retail and foodservice requirements.
The French market is a key market for Irish seafood. Buying better quality seafood over cheaper seafood is prevalent among French adults (Bord Bia, 2021) and shopper behaviour also indicates that consumes are looking to buy from certified sustainable fisheries (Bord Bia, 2021). These are preferences that Irish seafood can deliver on for French consumers.
Irish Seafood Suppliers
Suppliers will be showcasing the best of Irish seafood from pelagic fish to organic Irish Salmon. There will also be producers of oysters, crab, crayfish, prawns and organic mussels. Origin Green and Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) accreditation
The Irish seafood sector has embraced Origin Green accreditation, which is Ireland’s national sustainability programme. All fishermen, fish farmers and processors within the programme adhere to a high-standard of sustainability metrics, meaning that each supplier at SEG is devoted to sustainably producing high-quality Irish seafood and aquaculture. BIM also provides certification of standard such as the Responsibly Sourced Seafood Standard (RSS) for wild catch and the Certified Quality Aquaculture Standard, both of which are internationally recognised (Bord Bia, 2020). This ensures that when you are trading with Irish seafood suppliers, they’re produce is held to the high sustainability standards. You can find out more about Origin Green and BIM accreditation here.
