Chocolate Alternatives: A Guide to a Healthier Easter

We’ve all been there; you’ve just finished your Easter egg and all of the chocolates that accompany the holy grail, sat on the couch in a slump watching whatever awful film RTE have decided to rerun for the 100th time. Let’s face it, Easter is a time when many overindulge and this year will be no different. Unless you follow our guide for a healthier holiday.

Given what’s happened over the past 12 months, the vast majority of people have neglected exercise due to gyms being closed or an understandable lack of motivation. It’s become increasingly easier to come up with excuses as to why you’ve been gaining those extra few pounds and many have adopted the mindset that they’ll get back on track once the pandemic is finished. Here at Zenspace, we are big believers in being proactive in everything we do. Why wait to get back on track with your diet when small wins now could be incremental.

So how should you tackle the upcoming holiday being Easter, Surrounded by a whole host of enticing chocolates? Our advice is to seek out alternatives to chocolate. Real eggs are obviously a much healthier option in comparison with their chocolate counterparts, and they stick to the theme as well. Why not focus on creating a delicious meal using eggs such as an omelette with tomatoes, onion, cheese, and a meat of your choosing.

Often we gift one another chocolate eggs which can lead to a build up of eggs which ‘have’ to be consumed regardless of whether or not you want to eat them! Here are some great ideas for alternative gifts which can be exchanged amongst family members:

1) Easter flowers

Easter is all about new life, and what is more Spring-like than a gorgeous bunch of brightly coloured cut flowers? Find out what their favourite flowers are (or what colours they like) or go for yellows, whites and oranges for a burst of freshness.

2) Plants or seeds for the garden

Here's a gift that will keep on giving. Give green-fingered friends or employees young plants or seeds for flowers or even vegetables or herbs. It's a really thoughtful gift that embodies the spirit of Easter.

3) Tickets to an outdoor event

Although we are currently inn lockdown, some outdoor evets have been scheduled in foreign countries this summer already, ad evets in Ireland have been scheduled for late this year or early 2022. Find out what kind of outdoor event they'd love to attend, and surprise them with tickets? This could be an activity, an open house or garden, a fair or small music event.

4) Healthy Easter hamper

With a little thought, you can put together beautiful Easter hampers full of healthy delicious treats. You could even make and bake some items to give the hamper a really personal touch.

 5) Paint your own Easter eggs

If your children love crafts, teach them how to blow and paint real eggs this year, or reveal the magic that is adding foods (like red onion, coffee, turmeric) to the water when you boil eggs.

Whilst we have highlighted the various alternatives to chocolate, it is important to remember that we all deserve a treat every once in a while and it should not be a sin to eat chocolate at Easter. We are simply promoting moderation!
