Budapest is the capital of Hungary, located in the heart of Europe. The city is famous for its stunning natural setting with a rich architectural and historical heritage, offering an unmatched combination of culture, blooming gastronomy and the advantages of thermal waters and world heritage sights.
Here is a list of 5 things that you must visit if you decide to visit this glamorous city.
1. Hungarian National Assembly
It is situated on Kossuth Square in the Pest side of the city, on the eastern bank of the Danube. It was designed by Hungarian architect Imre Steindl in neo-Gothic style and opened in 1902. It has been the largest building in Hungary since its completion.
There are several cafes around the building where you can have a rest and enjoy the amazing scenery or you can get an insight into the building and discover the most beautiful rooms. The building is open nearly every day of the year for visits led by trained guides who speak numerous languages.

2. Fisherman's Bastion & Matthias Church
The Fisherman's Bastion was built between 1895 and 1902 to commemorate the 1000th birthday of the Hungarian country. It is one of the most stunning spots in Budapest where you can enjoy a truly amazing view of the city. If you want to take some unique photos for Instagram, you should definitely visit this place! The Bastion is open all year round, every day and night.
Not far from the Bastion you can find the most unique church in Europe, the Matthias Church. The Church has a breathtaking interior which you should not miss if you are in Hungary. It is not free to enter the Church, but it definitely worth the price.
You can book a guided walking tour ticket online, which includes visiting the Bastion, the Church, the Buda Castle and a coffe and dessert at end.
3. St. Stephen's Basilica
The St. Stephen's Basilica is the largest church in Budapest and is dedicated to the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen. The Basilica is really picturesque in itself, but you can enjoy an amazing view from the top of it as well. The entrance is free, but a 1 EUR donation is suggested at the door.
The square in front of the Basilica is filled with great cafes and restaurants, where you can try some Hungarian specialities like Goulash soup, Fish soup or Chicken paprikash.
4. Margaret Island
If you want to have a rest and simply just enjoy the nature, you should visit the Margaret Island, which is the biggest green oasis of the city. Walking around the park, reading a book under the trees, having a picnic, visiting some historical ruins or the Japanese Garden - there are so many things to do here. There is also a Zoo, if you are fond of animals, but you will probably meet some dogs or squirrels in the park as well.
Make sure you don't miss the Musical Fountain, which is the biggest one in the country. The fountain spews choreographed jets of water in time to music and lighting, with different songs playing every hour.
5. Heroes' Square
The Heroes' Square is one of the biggest squares in Budapest, it is one of the most emblematic and photographed sights of the city. In the middle of the square you can see Archangel Gabriel and the Seven Hungarian Tribes' chieftains encircle the coloumn. Next to the coloumn you can see a semicircled colonnade of statues of Hungarian kings and heroes.
Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, in 2019 it won the European Best Destinations award - not by chance. If you decide to visit the city, make sure to try the mouthwatering food, explore the sights, taste Hungarian wines, and enjoy the scenery. You will definitely not regret any moments there.
